Luke 17

“When He saw them he said them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went they were cleansed”. Luke 17:14

In today’s chapter, Luke introduces us to ten lepers that Jesus comes across while traveling to Jerusalem. Just FYI, lepers were banished from society. You see leprosy in that day was very contagious. It is defined as a bacterial disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nerves, causing discoloration and lumps. In severe cases, disfigurements and deformities occur. The lepers had to leave their families and live in a leper colony away from all other members of society. You can imagine not only the social stigma placed on them, but also the isolation they had to suffer.

Whenever anyone would venture close to their campsite, they had to yell out, “Unclean! Unclean!” How degrading and humiliating that must have been. Going back to the reading, Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem and the lepers cry out to Him, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” (vs.13) Jesus sees and says to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” (vs.14) Without any hesitation—they “went and were cleansed.” Their healing came through faith. Verse 5 is a fitting prayer for us all. “Lord, increase our faith. Let us trust you to do what we ask in your timing and in your way. And just like the leper who returned to thank you. Let us never forget ALL that you have done for us. We are forever grateful for your many miracles in our lives. Amen.”
