Luke 2

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an Angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.’” Luke 2:8-10

Shepherds. Not Mary’s mother; not King Herod; not the wise men; not even the High Priest, but the shepherds. The uneducated, unkempt, social outcasts of their time were the very first humans to hear the Gospel Message from heaven and be trusted to share it with the world (vs18). Let me ask you. If you had a chance to announce the promised Messiah (Savior) of all mankind, how would you do it? Would you promote in on social media? Would you write a book about it? Would you pay huge cash to get this good news on Fox or CNN? Or would you tell some marginalized community? Well, that is exactly what God did. God has made it clear that the message of Christ’s is to redeem and save the whole world.

Scholars believe that these shepherds were in fact, temple shepherds. They lived and cared for the lambs that were sacrificed each day. This was part of the process (Law) as payment for the sins of the people. How fitting the birth of Jesus was announced to the people who would understand His significance. God has a purpose and plan for everyone and everything He has created. God knows how to present His works in a way that will speak to every person so keep a look out for what He is trying to communicate to you.
