Luke 21

And He said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, “I am he!’ and, “The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.” Luke 21:8

I have to admit, lately I have been a little obsessed with something. Recently, a television network decided to create a few documentaries about two of the most notorious cult leaders and their followers. I had heard about the devastating tragedy in Waco, Texas and the horrible massacre at Jonestown but never knew the facts. While watching these documentaries I keep asking myself, “How did all of these people buy into these lies and allow themselves to be lead astray – even to the point of death and suicide?” In both cases, they all started as seekers and believers of God but allowed the false teachings of these “cult leaders” to change their convictions and ultimately it cost them their lives. I believe it is because they started listening to and heeding the words of a man rather than the Word of God.

Jesus tells us (in vs. 8) that “many will come in my name. Do not go after them.” The litmus tests we have for any teacher, pastor, counselor etc. is the Holy Word of God. If you are receiving teaching or counsel that goes against what is written in the Bible – that should alert you as an arsenal of the enemy. Of course, Satan would want to use false teachers, tainted doctrine, and lies to destroy God’s people. It has been his motive from the start (1 Peter 5:8). But we can battle and win against his tactics by reading God’s word for ourselves and examining every teaching and aspect of our lives through the lens of the Gospel. I commend you for picking up your sword (your Bible) and sharpening your knowledge daily through this series and others. Together we will stand as soldiers of God.
