Luke 5

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.” Luke 5:37-38

Throughout the Bible, wine has come to be known as a symbol for transformation. Just as grapes are changed through numerous chemical processes, God does His transforming of our lives through the work of His Holy Spirit. It is hard for us to imagine today but people in Jesus’ time had to carry their consumable liquids in skins taken from animals. Think of it as a leather canteen. When new wine was poured into and sealed up in these skin sacks a chemical reaction took place and a gas was produced. If a new wineskin was used, this was not a problem as the new pliable leather would stretch and accommodate the needed extra room. However, if an old skin was used it would be stiff and eventually explode with all the increased pressure.

God wants to do a new transforming work in our lives. Are you pliable to receive all that He wants to do in your life or has your heart become so tough by past hurts and rejection that you cannot be filled again?

If so, pray that the Lord would do a transforming work in your life. He will. He promises it.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.

And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26

Only then can you be completely filled and used in a mighty way to accomplish all of the missions that He wants to do in and through you.
