“And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17
The Pharisee scribes observe Jesus having a pleasant meal with the “scum of society”. Back then, they called them sinners and tax collectors. With contempt, the scribes ask the disciples, ‘Why is he (Jesus) eating with those people?’ (paraphrase). Jesus, aware of his surroundings hears the question and decides to fire back a with a very pointed answer. He says, ‘because they are in need of healing.’ In various places throughout the Bible, Jesus heals people physically. Consider this: doctors don’t take care of people who are already healthy—instead, they provide medical care for those who are sick. Similarly, Jesus didn’t come to heal the ‘righteous,’ he came for people who desperately needed spiritual healing.
This is especially important for us today. All the brokenness inside, the hurt, the disappointment, the damage…it can only be healed by one person: Jesus. Only He has the cure to take away our anger, isolation, depression, and feelings of worthlessness. If you’re experiencing any of these ailments today, the Great Physician Jesus waits to hear from you; and even more importantly, to heal you.
