Mark 7

And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” Mark 7:5-8

So many times throughout the gospels, Commander Jesus rebukes the Pharisees. This time the Pharisees are focusing on ritualistic traditions, trying to bait Jesus into a debate on what defiles a person. Jesus responds by calling them hypocrites and highlighting the fact that Isaiah mentioned them in prophecy. Isaiah said they worship in vain and teach doctrines as if they were from God. Jesus reprimands them and takes the opportunity to teach the people exactly what defiles a person. In verse 14-23, He says that it isn’t hand washing or anything a person eats that defiles him…it’s what comes out of a person that defiles him. It’s from the heart. Let us pray that God will change our hearts daily and give us one like His own.
