Philippians 1 – Strange Attraction

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me.” Philippians 1:21-22

This world has a strange and powerful attraction to the things that indulge our fleshly desires. The obsession to love these things compels many people to become enslaved, which seems to be limitless. Although we can taste and touch, as much as we wish, it appears that there is no end to the flesh’s appetite. Unfortunately, there is no eternal gain in this ever dying endeavor. For one day, death will visit every man’s doorstep, without notice and certainly without warning.

This is a far cry for those who choose to live for Christ. To “Live for Him” means to love Him over any desire, over any appetite the flesh may have. No matter how strong the attraction to the object may be, they dismiss it and pursue Jesus, relentlessly.

“And to die is gain” means that though a believer may experience physical death, they’re able to gain the longing desire to be with the one they love, the Lord Jesus Christ. After all, what greater gain can one experience that could rival pure love and perfection?

What are you living for? A job, a family, or something else. Are you living life to gain eternity or are you slowly dying with all the fadin affections of this world?  It’s time to make some serious decisions. Choose to live for God and discard anything else that keeps you from Him.
