1 Thessalonians 5

1 Thessalonians 5 – On Fire

“Do not quench the Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 5:19

To quench is to physically extinguish, such as something on fire. Spiritually speaking, it can be used as a metaphor to suppress or stifle a spirit that is excited or on fire.

The Holy Spirit is a fire that dwells in every believer who has given their lives to Jesus. For “where the spirit is, there is liberty.” Liberty to encourage, exhort, convict, rebuke and enable the Christian to bear the fruits of righteousness.

It’s by the Holy Spirit a Christian can manifest the person of Jesus and can bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit; “…love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22).

Paul understood the power of the Holy Spirit, especially when the saints of God were in full blaze! Therefore, Paul warned the saints not to yield their members to sin, ultimately quenching the very power that gave them life.

The Holy Spirit within every believer is a giver of holy fire. Bengal wrote that “where the Spirit is, He (God in man) burns.”  With this in mind, are you burning like a bright light for Jesus? Can others feel and see what God is doing in your life? Or have you hindered your progress by enjoying the world and all its dying pleasures? My friend, don’t quench what God has purposed for your life. He loves you!
