Galatians 5 – Running Well

“You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?” Galatians 5:7

Was there ever a day you committed your life to God? It was a refreshing decision; every obstacle seemed to be achievable. You felt alive, and there was nothing that could stop you?

Paul recalls the incredible testimony the Galatian Christians had in past times. The Galatians started their Christianity in an inspiring way, but somewhere along their race, they began to stumble. The writer to the Hebrews quotes, “let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1a).

It was evident to Paul as to what had hindered these once bright burning stars for Jesus; it was sin. One may think that sin is some sort of gross crime, or perhaps an unhealthy vice or even some kind of vile emotion, but it wasn’t any of these things that had dampened these bright lights…. It was false doctrine. False doctrine puts heavy weights over the shoulders of the saints; they bind the spirit and rot the soul. Sadly, the Galatians became victims of false doctrine. Now, they were stumbling.

Where do you stand with the truth? Are you aligned with a denominational doctrine, a philosophical ideology or with the word of God? In this world, there are many voices, but all that matters is what the Lord says. May we be challenged and be like the New Testament Bereans who, “examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
