Luke 16

He said to him, “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone raises from the dead.” Luke 16:31

We all love to have proof. We love facts and figures and tangible evidence that something is real. If it cannot be observed or understood using our five senses then we struggle to trust that it is true. Am I right? But… that is where faith comes in. Hebrews 11:1 gives us the definition of faith as “evidence of things not seen.” In today’s chapter we are told a story of a rich man that denies the truth of God’s commandments and after dying goes to “hades” or hell. He begs with Abraham to send Lazarus (the poor man who also died but was in heaven)  “to warn” his five brothers so that they will not be tormented in hell like him, when they die. Abraham tells the rich man that his brothers have “Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them”, (vs.29) and then gives him his final answer as it is found in our verse today.

You see, after we die there are no second chances. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that, “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes the judgment.” And 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, “ Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Are you sensing the urgency in this verse? Good, because there is. After we die, that is it. There is no holding area, no scales that weigh our good and bad deeds, no talking our way out of it. Once a man dies he is judged as to what decision he made in accepting and following Jesus.

If you have never prayed and asked for Jesus’ gift of salvation and eternal life, do it now! Don’t put it off. We are not guaranteed tomorrow and you may never have this chance again. Today is the day! And if you are a Christian but have people in your life that you know are going to hell when they die, it is up to you to tell them the truth. This is a direct order from our Commander (Mark 16:15). I would never want to feel the shame and heartache after the death of a loved one knowing they are eternally tormented and separated from God because I kept putting off sharing with them the truth that I know about my Savior. Don’t let the enemy discourage you in thinking you don’t have enough biblical knowledge or you are not qualified. You are. You have the Spirit of the Living God you and you are His warrior empowered and commanded to bring His message of hope, love and eternal life to this world. Be encouraged! It is not up to us to “save” people. We are just to obey the given orders to share the gospel with those around us that so desperately need to hear it. So… GO, BE BOLD and SEIZE THE DAY!
