Philippians 3 – Pressing Forward

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

For many, the past is riddled with poor decisions and painful moments. These events tend to alter people’s life, more often for the worse rather than the better.

We have a choice: allow the past to either destroy us or to build us up. These experiences were by no means an accident. God knew before time that they would occur. They were experienced for a reason; to prepare and define you for a specific purpose God has designed specifically for you.

Paul understood what it was to have a dark past. Sadly, he lived with the fact that he was not only a persecutor of the church but was also a participant in Stephen’s death (Acts 7). No doubt he carried this regret throughout his life. Nevertheless, what allowed him to move on was the unconditional forgiveness Jesus provided. Because of God’s supernatural grace, all Paul had to do was forgive himself and accept the plans God had in store for him.

Do you have a dark past; filled with difficulties and moments you wish to forget? The bible says to “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.” God wants you to live for the future and not for the past; running for the prize of the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus!
