1 Corinthians 13

1 Corinthians 13 – Love is Paramount
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

It’s my opinion that Paul was likely the most spiritually gifted man recorded in the Bible. Academically speaking, he was schooled in some of the best academic institutions; trained to be a Pharisee. Not only was he schooled in the best academics, but some historians believe that he likely was fluent with at least five languages. Spiritually speaking, the bible records that Paul had the gift of prophecy and deep revelatory knowledge. He also had the gift to physically heal others with ailments. There is no doubt that the Holy Spirit was strong with him.

Although he was so gifted, Paul made it a point that none of these blessing really mattered if he didn’t possess the most important attribute, love.  It did not matter that he had the eloquent tongue of men or angels, if he did not have love, he was nothing but a loud banging sound.

He would go further saying that even if he understood the deepest mysteries and knowledge, if he didn’t have love, he was nothing. If he possessed the faith that could move mountains, but did not have love, he was powerless.

Paul was trying to make a point. No matter how much you give or you possess in this world, if you don’t have the love of God, then you really don’t possess anything with eternal worth. After all, the greatest gift you can have is the love of God!

My friend, are you a person that has been blessed with many possessions? Perhaps your blessings have not been with earthly wealth but physical attributes or public influence? If so, are you motivated to use your resources for the glory of God? Are you compelled by true undefiled love? If not, it’s time to get back to the basics – the love of God!
