2 Corinthians 7 – Cleansing

“Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1

We live in a world where people maintain facades. On the outside, they look prosperous and successful. Their families appear to be happy and satisfied. They have the big house and the fancy cars. But on the inside, it’s quite the opposite. They are suffering and broken. Many are unhappy because they’re slaves to daily vices.

Much of this misery is due to loving the things of this world.  John profoundly expresses, “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”

Paul warned the Corinthians that if they desired a relationship with God, they would have to put away their commitment towards sin. Not only were they to stop doing the things that defiled their body and spirit, they were to pursue holiness.

Is there something in your life that has kept you away from God? Something that no one else knows except God, who sees in secret? If so, let me warn you; it’s impossible to live a life of joy with sin hidden in your heart. Put away that thing that has enslaved you and “pursue holiness in the fear of God.”
