Romans 6

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:1-4

From the moment a lost sinner has repented and confessed the name of Jesus, they’re called out of the dark world and into God’s marvelous light. This transformation means that our former world-centered life is buried and our new life should be centered on Christ. What kind of old habits should be buried? Anything that may stand in the way from completely honoring God.

These old habits we are called to bury may be an addiction, a terrible vice, a leisure activity, or even a sport. It’s anything you have idolized and has taken the place of where God belongs.

It’s true that many habits cannot be overcome by your own strength. In fact, we have no power to overcome such a great obstacle like sin. Thank God, He sent Jesus to fight for us on our behalf. Christ did what we could not do, “break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” Hebrews 2:15-16. Therefore, let us who have received the life changing power of God’s Spirit walk in the newness of life.  Not only have been buried with Jesus, but we’ve also been raised with Him!
